Forthnet S.A. is a leading provider of broadband network services in Greece. The company was established in November 1995 and was the first Internet Service Provider in Greece. Now, Forthnet is a convergent services provider offering from VoIP to Internet, PayTV and value-added services to more than 600.000 home and SME subscribers. Forthnet Group has a full time staff of 1440 employees.

Forthnet has its R&D unit in the Science & Technology Park of Crete. The approach of R&D in Forthnet is market-driven, aiming to deliver prototypes and experimental results utilising innovative technologies into eServices and networking and to facilitate the transition of commercial activities to modern technologies and services. Main R&D interests include: Broadband communications, Next-Generation networks, Wireless & Ad-Hoc networks, Billing, OSS, Network & SLA Management, QoS Assurance, Network & VoIP Security, E-Content & Networked Media management & distribution, eTourism, eHealth, eLearning, eGovernment, Advanced Messaging Systems and EWS, User mobility and Mobile Internet.

Within this context, Forthnet studies the use and exploitation of modern ICT technologies in the area of tourism, user mobility and transport. During the last 3 years and having more than 10-year experience in European and National R&D projects related to tourism and transport, Forthnet R&D co-ordinated the WISETRIP project aiming to provide international and intermodal trip-planning with personalised assistance; further advancements of WISETRIP project results will be carried out through Enhanced WISETRIP project


The TRANsportation Systems and LOGistics Laboratory (AUEB-RC/TRANSLOG) is a Research Laboratory that belongs to the Department of Management Science and Technology of the Athens University of Economics and Business. The major thrust of AUEB-RC/TRANSLOG’s research activities involves:

i) applications of Management Science methods and Information Systems technologies on transportation systems and logistics,

ii) analysis of behavioural and organizational aspects of transportation and logistics systems,

iii) development and application of impact assessment methodologies. 

AUEB-RC/TRANSLOG's research philosophy is based on the recognition of the interdisciplinary character of the contemporary Transportation & Logistical problems.

The Laboratory has an extensive research record and has successfully participated in more than 50 research projects funded by the European Commission, the Greek government, and private companies. Indicative Research Projects relevant to WISETRIP 2 scope: WISETRIP “Wide Scale Network of E-systems for Multimodal Journey Planning and Delivery of Trip Intelligent Personalised Data” (2008-2010), funded by the European Commission, DG TREN; ENOSIS “An Integrated Decision Support System for providing Real Time Transit Information in a Multimodal Transportation System” (2003-2006), supported by the Greek Ministry of Development- General Secretariat of Research and Technology; WH@M “The World in your Hands on the Move” (2000-2002), funded by the European Commission DG INFSO; WTWTW “Travel and Tourism Information on the WWW” (1998-2000), funded by the European Commission DG INFSO.

ETRA are largely experienced in the development of location based, personalised services. ETRA proprietary services include the public transport systems for information to the passengers and the traffic management systems based on real time traffic information. ETRA’s activities also include: Intelligent Transportation Systems, location based personalised services, satellite-related applications, Complex Distributed Real Time control systems, Grid, Intelligent Agents, Semantic Web, Ontologies, SOA, Web Services, interoperability of complex heterogeneous systems. ETRA I+D brings into the project their expertise in research and development of new technologies and applications as well as a long success record in managing large scale complex EU RTD projects for DG Research, DG TREN and DG INFSO. The success record of the company includes more than 50 projects –half of them led by ETRA- in FP3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.  FP7- 224342-ICT-2007-2 PECES and FP7- 247926 - ICT-2009-4 NOBEL are recent examples of large FP7 projects led by ETRA.


TNO is one of the largest research and technology organizations in Europe.

TNO conducts research and gives advice on passenger and freight transport, transport and infrastructure technologies and logistics. It has a multi-disciplinary structure and draws on the experience of transport engineers, economists, mathematicians, urban planners and information scientists.

The main customers of TNO are European, central and regional governmental bodies, (non-)profit organizations as well as the industrial partners such as Toyota, DAF, MAN, VW and BMW. 

Additionally, TNO has the experience and competence for leading relevant workpackages giving its research core business in ICT, mobility and energy research. TNO has lead several large-scale EU projects such as CITYMOBIL, TRANSTOOLS, REFIT, RETRACK, SAFESPOT, TISSUE, TRANSTOOLS, EcoMOVE and many others.

TNO is the daily advisor for the EC on emissions factors. TNO has carried out several projects on traffic models in relation to environment and has built and runs the model VERSIT+ which is the leading model for the determination for emission factors in Europe (EC) and the Netherlands (Min. of Environment).


The University of Aberdeen (UNIABDN) is Scotland's third oldest and the fifth oldest in the UK. Aberdeen is an international university built on serving one of the most dynamic regions of Europe.

With over 13,000 students, and over 3000 staff the University of Aberdeen is at the forefront of teaching and research in medicine, the humanities and sciences.

The Centre for Transport Research (CTR) has been established in the School of Geosciences in the University of Aberdeen to bring together the expertise in transport research in the University. The Centre for Transport Research (CTR) acts as the focus for transport research at the University of Aberdeen. CTR’s mission statement is: “To develop a leading research centre of international excellence and reputation in Aberdeen specialising in the sustainability of transport systems with emphasis on environment, society and technology.”

The Centre for Transport Research was established in September 2007 and focuses on three broad themes Transport, Energy and Environment; Transport and Society; and Transport and the Digital Economy. There are currently 25 staff and postgraduate research students involved in CTR.


Established at the end of 2005, NEXTANT Spa is an Italian, private owned, ICT Company based in Rome, classified as SME according to the European Commission classification (96/280/EU).

The mission of NEXTANT is to develop and propose to the proper market sectors, innovative applications and services based on ICT and Satellite Navigation services.

To this purpose the Company has invested on Research and Innovation projects, accessing European and National funding, and in particular following the stream of R&I activities. NEXTANT aims at completing the process, through the industrialization of the prototypes and demonstration components, and packing them into competitive solution to propose to the market sectors requiring high degree of innovation.

In particular for the sectors Infomobility, Emergency Services, Cultural Heritage (safeguard and fruition), Maritime and Air Traffic Management, NEXTANT has already completed the process, and some of its solutions are already operative:

  • VECTOR:  “real time monitoring system for sensitive items transportation” to monitor and control “sensible goods” during transport
  • NESS: “Emergency Support System” is to support the Emergency Services organization
  • XInfo: Advanced client server platform for advanced vehicular mobility applications (Access control, Road tolling, Traffic Monitoring, eCall).
  • NEXTOUR: Mobile application that provides innovative service for fruition of Art Cities, archaeological areas and for the safeguard of Cultural Assets. The potentialities of social network integration have been demonstrated in the NEXTOUR application


Telespazio, a joint venture between Finmeccanica (67%) and Thales (33%), is one of the world’s leading operators in satellite management services, Earth observation and satellite navigation, as well as in the field of integrated communications and scientific programmes. The Rome-based company employs around 2,000 staff, and operates a network of four space centres and 25 sites spread all over the world. Notably, these include the Fucino Space Centre, which has more than 90 operational antennas, and is the largest satellite telecommunications centre in the world for civil use. Telespazio plays a leading role in the reference markets harnessing technological experience acquired over the years and through its participation in major European space programmes such as: Galileo, EGNOS, GMES and COSMO-SkyMed. The company is member of the Space Alliance between Finmeccanica and Thales.

Telespazio business areas include: Satellite operations, Milsatcom (the primary satellite service provider for the Italian Ministry of Defence),Earth Observation, Integrated Communications, Navigation and Infomobility, contribution to the development of Galileo, the European satellite navigation programme, and the EGNOS (European Geostationary Overlay Navigation System) programme, participation to international Scientific Programmes (including e.g. experiments on board the International Space Station, ISS).

The Technological Innovation Dept. realized a Simulation’s Laboratory (LSS) that is involved in many European Projects funded by European Commission, GSA, ESA, and Directorate General Justice, Freedom and Security too.  Main activities of the LSS include: Satellite system risk analysis and assessment for Navigation and Communication sectors; analysis of the interdependency among satellite systems and the other critical infrastructure such as Energy and Transportation; coverage analysis in maritime surveillance scenarios with synergic Satellite + UAV performances evaluation; EO satellite constellations performances analysis and assessment; telecommunication studies (Link budget and sizing of telecommunication assets) both for terrestrial and space links.


Joint Stock Company Research & Design Institute for Information Technology, Signalling and Telecommunications on Railway Transport (JSC NIIAS), is a subsidiary company of Russian Railways (JSC RZD)

For more than fifty years of its history the Institute has done a large volume of work related to creation of new railway automation and remote control equipment, as well as development of information technology and improvement of existing signalling, interlocking and block systems. NIIAS is Russia’s leading research and design company in the area of railway traffic control and safety, geoinformation support, rolling stock and infrastructure monitoring, satellite navigation and communications on railway transport.

Beijing Transportation Research Center (BTRC), who works to gather the municipal research power, integrate intellectual resources from various sources and systematically research on transportation, was established in January 2002 by Beijing Municipal Government and the Municipal Committee. 

Major responsibilities of the BTRC are: researching on Beijing’s urban transportation development strategies, policies and planning; keeping track of the most concerned and bottle-neck issues in urban transportation; organizing and coordinating researches conducted by relevant transportation research institutions and providing solutions and schemes for the Municipal Government by integrating their research achievements; collecting and releasing urban traffic information and compiling annual report on urban transportation development; providing the Municipal Government with grounds for making decisions on key issues in urban transportation development.

The route planner in Beijing is now available at several different websites, such as for bus only (owned by the Beijing Public Transport Holdings, Ltd.), for both public transport and private car, etc. Both cover the whole of Beijing.



Polis has been a platform for dialogue and cooperation on current transport issues for cities and regions around Europe since 1989. It currently represents almost 70 cities, regions and transport operators from 18 European countries. Polis events, publications and in-house expertise create opportunities for its members to exchange experience and forge partnerships among themselves, with the industry and the research community, and to develop innovative solutions.

The objective of Polis is to support European cities and regions to improve the quality of life of their citizens through innovative measures for sustainable urban transport. The Network facilitates access to European initiatives and research programmes for its members, looking into solutions for urban and regional mobility, including health and environment, traffic management and intelligent transport systems, road safety, and social and economic aspects of transport. Polis also provides decision-makers with strategic information to improve urban and regional transport, and it advocates the development of an adequate policy framework at the European level to achieve sustainable mobility in cities and regions.

Polis has a longstanding experience in developing innovative solutions for local transport and has participated in many EU projects and local activities in this field. Polis ensures the dissemination of results in many EU projects, supports cities and regions in implementing innovative solutions through focus groups, seminars and individualised guidance and advice, manages demonstration work-packages in several Integrated Projects and coordinates end-user groups in industry-led projects.

Polis acts as a facilitator between the EU projects and their end-users in cities in publishing guidance and policy notes aiming at supporting the use of project results by cities and regions. Polis also is vice-president of the European Road Transport Research Advisory Committee ERTRAC and chairman of ERTRAC's Urban Mobility Taskforce. The Network is and has been involved in numerous EU projects on urban transport and mobility. Relevant projects within the scope of ENHANCED WISETRIP include CONDUITS, COOPERATIVE CITIES (follow-up to IN-TIME), CVIS, NICHES+, ASK-IT, etc.


The EMT Madrid (“Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid S.A.”) is a public company created in 1947, it is owned by the Madrid council. It runs the bus transport service in the municipality of Madrid and is the largest company in Spain in its industry. It is integrated in the “Consorcio Regional de Transportes” (Regional transport authority) which coordinates the transport offer in Madrid City and surroundings. Nowadays, EMT employs nearly 8000 workers and 2100 buses are available to travel in 217 routes across Madrid. Yearly, the EMT’s buses are travelling more than 100 millions of kilometres, carrying 440 millions of passengers.

Apart of the transport offer of EMT, which is positioning the company as the most important in the Madrid traffic system, the company is at the cutting edge of Intelligent Transport Systems and Customer Information Systems. The EMT of Madrid is really concerned with the fact of improving the service given to the passengers and those investments will mean a better service to the population.

The main target of the route planner that EMT provides is to offer a route with an origin point and a concrete destination, based on the number of transfers, the used time and the least way covered by foot.
